Sodium Bicarbonate, Baking Soda, Bicarbonate of Soda, Baking Powder… whatever you like to call it (let’s just go with Bicarb), when it comes to deodorant, there’s so many mixed messages out there about this singular ingredient. Is it bad for the skin? Good? Read on to find out.
What is it?
Sodium Bicarbonate – as it’s traditionally called – is a salt. It’s a white crystalline solid, but often appears as a powder with a salty, alkaline taste. Fun scienc-y fact: it’s a component of the mineral ‘natron’ and is found dissolved in many mineral springs.
Who should use Bicarb-Free deodorant?
Bicarb is found in many natural deodorants, acting as a really effective natural odour-neutraliser. On the downside, it can often irritate and aggravate sensitive skin, cause reactions and flare up itchy rashes. Some people find that their skin may react to Bicarb even if they don’t have sensitive skin in the first place. The best way to find out if this is you? Patch test. If you’ve deduced that baking soda is a problem for your skin type, you might also want to avoid other potentially harmful ingredients like aluminium, parabens, and phthalates. Our Bicarb-Free Natural Deodorant Paste is the safest alternative (free from all of the above!) and can do the seemingly impossible: keep body odour at bay all day long without irritating your underarm area. We’ve replaced the Bicarb with Magnesium Hydroxide, for added detoxifying and antibacterial benefits.
Who should use Bicarb-Containing deodorant?
Those of us who don’t have sensitive skin or haven’t had a reaction to Bicarb can take full advantage of this clever natural ingredient. Not only is it a powerful antibacterial, helping to prevent infections by eradicating underarm bacteria, but it’s also fabulous at combatting that dreaded stink. Finding a deodorant with the right concentration is the key to happy underarms. Take ours for example: we use the perfect amount of Bicarb mixed with sweat-absorbing Arrowroot and nourishing Shea Butter and Coconut Oil to bring you an effective Deodorant Paste that offers all day freshness, does what it’s supposed to and smells pretty great too!
